Symposium
March 26-27, 2007
University of California, Berkeley

On March 26 and 27, 2007 the Center for Studies in Higher Education hosted the symposium "The Crisis of the Publics" on the Berkeley campus with support from the Spencer Foundation. Invited participants included higher education scholars and practitioners, with the largest representation from outside of the U.S. The goals of the symposium were three-fold:

a) To initiate a discussion and preliminary analysis of higher education reforms and innovations within select OECD countries and possibly some other nations in key policy areas.

b) To discuss possible new international collaboration between U. S. and international systems and institutions of higher education.

c) To help frame a future international comparative research project that will assess these reforms and innovations for possible implications for public universities in the United States, and assess potential international collaborations.

A report on the robust discussion and major observations is available under Conference Proceedings. Working papers will be published.

The "Crisis of the Publics" Symposium was followed by a related one-day academic and celebratory conference CSHE@50: A Reflection and Prospectus on Globalization and Higher Education.

The symposium was organized by The Center for Studies in Higher Education in association with the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy.

Funding support was provided by the Spencer Foundation.
