A Conference Held to Celebrate the Center's 50th Anniversary
In association with The Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy and the Institute for International Studies - UC Berkeley.
Support Provided by the Carnegie Corporation
In the spring of 1957, the University of California’s Board of Regents and faculty senate formally established the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) on the Berkeley campus. Initial funding was provided under a Carnegie Corporation grant provided in late 1956 under an agreement orchestrated by Carnegie Corporation president John W. Gardner, University of California President Robert Gordon Sproul, Berkeley Chancellor Clark Kerr, and the first CSHE Director, T.R. McConnell.
CSHE became the first academic research institute in the United States focused on higher education policy issues, providing a catalyst for the development of other research centers and growth of higher education as an important policy field.
On March 27 and 28, 2007, the Center for Studies in Higher Education celebrated its 50th anniversary by organizing a conference focused on the Globalization and Higher Education, and included scholars, policymakers, and a large gathering of CSHE alumni on the Berkeley campus.

The one-and-a-half day conference was both an academic and celebratory event that will reflect on the influence of globalization—past, present, and future—on higher education systems and institutions, incorporating past and current research and viewpoints of scholars and leaders, many who have current and past CSHE affiliations.
The conference provided the bases for the report, A Reflection and Prospectus on Globalization and Higher Education: CSHE@50.
