In the month of April, the Center for Studies in Higher Education and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, UC Berkeley sponsored the first seminar of this series. Bekir Gür, a Turkish Academic and post- doctoral visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, writing a comparative study of American and Turkish higher education presented. The seminar covered the development of the higher education system in Turkey in terms of massification and democratization. Bekir Gür, uncovered the current challenges related to access, quality, and democratization in Turkey.

BIOGRAPHY

Bekir Gür is currently a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds an assistant Professor position at Yıldırım Beyazıt University, Ankara. Bekir Gür has been an advisor to the Board of Higher Education (YÖK) of Turkey, the director of educational policy research at SETA Foundation, Ankara, and a columnist for the Star daily, a high circulation Turkish newspaper.
