This symposium is being organized by the Center for Studies in Higher Education and is a part of its ongoing research program in the governance of higher education.

May 2001 will mark Clark Kerr's 90th birthday as well as the expected publication of the first volume of his memoirs. We hope this will be both a celebratory event and an opportunity to discuss a number of major strategic issues facing American higher education today.
