Learning through Nets
Professor Peter Deussen, Center for Multimedia, University of Karlsruhe, Germany

The presentation gives an overview over the following efforts:

  • State program "Virtual University Baden-Württemberg"
  • Project "Virtual Association of Colleges in Karlsruhe (ViKar)" which is part of the above  state program

The state program "Virtual University Baden-Württemberg" was started in 1998 and is equipped with 45 Mio DM (23 Mio Euro). From 65 proposals, 6 proposals have been selected in a two step process, and a competence center was installed at the DIFF in Tuebingen. Goals of the program are to foster new technologies in university education, to evoke lasting changes in curricula, and to find new didactics suitable for multimedia presentation. More details are given in the presentation as well as an overview over the projects.

One of the projects is the "Virtual Association of Colleges in Karlsruhe (ViKar)". In it, all six institutions for higher education located in Karlsruhe and which are both structurally different and address different groups of students collaborate. Consequently, the main challenge is the re-use of multimedia teaching modules and their adaptation to the needs and knowledge of these student groups.
