Call for Papers - SERU/UCUES Research Symposium, May 8, 2008, UCLA

A NEW GENERATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: Understanding the Student Experience and Seeking Opportunities to Translate Analysis into Practice

Organized by the Students Experience in the Research University (SERU) Project based at the Center for Studies in Higher Education, University of California – Berkeley

Co-sponsored by the UCLA Office of Vice Chancellor Student Affairs, the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and the UC Office of the President – Vice President for Student Affairs

The Student Experience in the Research University Project, based at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at UC Berkeley, will hold the 2nd Annual SERU/UCUES Symposium on Thursday May 8, 2008 on the UCLA campus. The SERU Project is fostering an ongoing research program on student life, culture, and perspectives and developed the University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES), an on-line census survey of all undergraduates at UC.

The symposium will gather scholarly and policy oriented researchers to present papers and findings focused largely on the undergraduate experience at the University of California, but open also to scholars doing work at other major research universities. It is our goal to encourage research, analysis, and discussion on the current state of, and possible methods for improving, the undergraduate experience that result in publishable papers via the SERU Project or other scholarly and policy outlets.

We welcome proposals for research papers on the undergraduate experience and especially encourage UCUES-based studies on the following topics:

- Measuring Student Outcomes
- The Transfer Student Experience
- Social Mobility and Consequences of Class
- Student Research Experiences and Academic Engagement
- Diversity, Merit and Admissions Policies
- Understanding Student Political Engagement
- The Immigrant Experience
- Student Mental Health
- Student Outreach and UC Academic Performance

Paper proposals are due by February 6, 2008. Please include an abstract, your affiliation, and a short description of recent research interests, publications, and papers. Send your proposal (no more than 2 pages) as a Word document to: Steve Chatman, SERU Project Director (steve_chatman@berkeley.edu)

Papers are due April 24, 2008 (no exceptions) and must be at least 12 pages long (double spaced) for distribution to symposium participants prior to the May 8th symposium. Authors will present a short presentation on their findings. Travel funds for authors will be provided for those outside of the immediate Los Angeles area.

Those researchers interested in providing a working paper based on UCUES data but who are not familiar with the UCUES database and protocols are encouraged to contact Steve Chatman (steve_chatman@berkeley.edu or 510-643-7141). More information on the SERU project and UCUES is available on the SERU website: http://cshe.berkeley.edu/research/seru

Faculty, graduate students, and institutional researchers are invited to attend the symposium to participate in the discussion and to learn of research opportunities using UCUES data.
