Scholars Offer a Reflection and Prospectus on Globalization and Higher Education in New CSHE Report

December 20, 2007 - To help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Center for Studies in Higher Education, a distinguished group of scholars gathered on the Berkeley campus, some 160 participants in total, offering their views on the significant changes confronting higher education and the influence of international models, the global market for students and highly skilled labor, high bandwidth networking around the world and the increasing value society places on universities to stimulate both economic growth and socioeconomic mobility.

The new report “A Reflection and Prospectus on Globalization in Higher Education” summarizes that discussion, including an historical look at how the scholarly field on higher education has grown and changed over the past five decades.

Contributors to the final report include C. Judson King, John Aubrey Douglass, Neil Smelser, Karl Pister, Jack Schuster, Janet Ruyle, Sheldon Rothblatt, I. Michael Heyman, Narciso Matos, Ahmed Bawa, Grant Harman, Michael Shattock, Kerstin Eliasson, Irwin Feller, Martin Kenney, Henry Etzkowitz, Alison Bernstein, John Gage, Rory Hume, Gary Matkin, Diane Harley, Clifford Lynch, Richard Garrett, Robert Berdahl, Marijk van der Wende, Philip Altbach, Wilhelm Krull, and Daniel Fallon.

In addition, CSHE has developed a website with a brief history of CSHE, list of publications and past researchers and associates, a picture gallery of the event, and an online video of the panel sessions.

Funding for the event and publications was provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which provided the initial grant for the Center under a proposal developed by Clark Kerr, Robert Gordon Sproul, T.R. McConnell, and John Gardner.
