Steve Chatman

Steve Chatman, Ph.D., directs the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) Project at the Center for Studies in Higher Education. SERU is a comprehensive survey of the undergraduate experience used by a consortium of 10 Association of American Universities member institutions and by the University of California as UCUES. His responsibilities include questionnaire design, survey administration, data management, and psychometric research for SERU.

Dr. Chatman has served as director of institutional research offices for about twenty years in a variety of settings, including a university system office, research university, and regional college. He has been active in the Association for Institutional Research at the national and regional levels throughout his career and has twice won the best paper award at the annual forum of the association. He was also responsible in 2001 for the first electronic survey of all undergraduates attending a large research university.

Recent publications by Dr. Chatman include a chapter, "Working with Large-Scale Climate Surveys: Reducing Data Complexity to Gain New Insights," in Campus Climate, Diversity, and Educational Benefits -- New Insights from Recent Research (Serge Herzog, Ed.), New Directions for Institutional Research, (Vol. 145) and an Association for Institutional Research Professional File Series paper, "Institutional Versus Academic Discipline Measures of Student Experience: A Matter of Relative Validity." Areas of research interest include affordability, academic assessment and program review, student research engagement, and the many dimensions of student diversity.
