"Acorns and Manzanita Cider:
In Search of the Original 'California Cuisine'"

by Ira Jacknis

Part one of this issue presents various aspects of agricultural research and education at the university: a history of Riverside's 100-year-old Citrus Experiment Station and from UC Santa Cruz the story of an important program in sustainable agriculture and organic food production. Part two describes a diverse range of California cuisine on and off the campus: from the native American table to the nineteenth century Berkeley student eating clubs, to the food revolution of Alice Waters, to the menus of University House, and a look into the Faculty Club bar. A very special part three presents evocative poetry and a rare look at a hidden campus painting--all with food in mind.
