Approaches to Engineering Education

This area of endeavor considers ways of adapting the content and structure of engineering education to the needs of students entering today's profession.  Issues are broadening the education of the engineer, movement of the accredited, professional degree to the master’s level, and how these changes can most realistically be accomplished.  In one project, supported by the Dreyfus Foundation and carried out by John Prausnitz (Chemical Engineering), modules are being developed that will enable elements of humanities and social sciences education to be brought directly into engineering courses.  Another area of interest is the community college transfer route for engineers, and curricular innovations by which it can be made more effective.

The Center maintains close liaison with the National Academy of Engineering's Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education (CASEE), for which the director serves as chair of the Advisory Board.
