Publications - The Future of Scholarly Communication

The Center and its partners are developing a new project that will address the most pressing issues faced by research universities as new forms of publishing and scholarly communication emerge. Driving forces are the enhanced capabilities afforded to authors and users by information technology, the declining purchasing power of library budgets, pricing and bundling practices of purveyors, the uncertain status of the scholarly monograph, and the initiation and growth of concepts such as open access and institutional repositories. A focal point of the project is an assessment of faculty value and reward systems as they relate to utilization of innovative means of communication and publication. The values for both advancement within university academic ranks and stature within individual disciplines will be considered. This knowledge will be combined with business models developed for various innovative means of publication and other factors to produce conclusions as to the viability and sustainability of various means of publication and communication.
