California State University East Bay President Leroy M. Morishita '74 will discuss the challenges facing public higher education in California today. With over three decades of experience in the California State University system, President Morishita will discuss the evolution of the Master Plan for Higher Education,shrinking state support for these institutions and the opportunity gap this has created for California's most vulnerable populations. Leroy M. Morishita has been president of California State University, East Bay since 2011. Prior to his arrival at Cal State East Bay, he served as executive vice president for Administration and Finance and chief financial officer of San Francisco State University after holding positions of successive responsibility during 29 years at the institution.
Dr. Morishita serves on several committees for the California State University 23 campus system. He is a member of the CSU President’s Council on Underserved Communities and the Presidential Coordinator for the Asian American/Pacific Islander Initiative. In addition, he serves as co-chair of the Taskforce for a Sustainable Financial Model for the California State University system and as a member of the CSU Commission on Online Education.
Dr. Morishita is chair of the California Campus Compact Executive Board, chair of the Presidents’ and Chancellors’ Board of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, and a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Investment Committee. Locally he is a founding member of the Chabot Space and Science Center Leadership Council, a trustee of the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, and serves on the board of directors of the Bay Area Council and the East Bay Leadership Council. He is a member of the Executive Committee and a board member of the East Bay Economic Development Alliance. He chairs the board of trustees of the JA Health Benefits Trust.
Dr. Morishita holds an Ed.D. in administration, planning and social policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education; an M.S. in counseling from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.
