The Japanese translation of John Aubrey Douglass's book The California Idea and American Higher Education received the Publishing Book Award from the Japan Association for College and University Education. It was published by Tamagawa University Press in July 2023.
Reason for selection (translated):
This book is a substantial and excellent academic work that discusses the history of the establishment of the California State University System, the largest state university system in the United States, over the course of a century. The book examines the conflicting ideals and interests of various actors involved in the university system—including the state legislature, state board of education, the board of regents(of UC), presidents, and coordinating board—as well as the processes of negotiation, compromise, and coordination that unfolded over time. Drawing on an extensive body of source material, the book illuminates the political process that led to the adoption of the Master Plan, revealing it as the result of the arduous efforts of those involved. While the book covers the history of policy formation up to the 1960s, the translation includes an appendix by the author, as well as an introduction and afterword by the translator, providing supplementary explanations of the current situation and insights into the master plan and the book's implications for Japan, making it valuable for members of this society. The translators' efforts to condense the original text, which is challenging in parts, into an accessible translation, are also noteworthy.
