The Multi-Engagement Model: Understanding Diverse Pathways to Student Success at Research Universities provides an analytical framework that presents a holistic perspective for understanding the undergraduate student experience at large research-intensive public universities in the United States.

At a time in which American universities are facing political attacks as well as pressure and criticism on their value for money, this longitudinal study shows that students at major public research universities are highly engaged and choose different pathways to prepare for productive lives once they graduate. But it also finds that student engagement across key areas of research university experience – academics, research, extracurriculars, civic engagement, and career preparation – declined during the pandemic and has yet to fully recover.
