Public universities have major roles of providing access to higher education for large segments of the public and providing the workforce and intellectual underpinnings for state and regional social and economic development. In one major project, the Center has chosen to focus on the student experience in the largest of these universities, the University of California, as viewed by the students themselves. Another current effort examines the appropriate extent and structure of general education in public research universities. In a major developing project the Center will undertake an international comparative study, examining recent developments in other countries involving research universities, and deriving from that study new paths and approaches that should be considered by U. S. research universities in their current circumstances.
