May 12, 2017 - The Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year (2017) with a series of activities, including a major international conference from November 16-17, 2017 on the Berkeley campus. This conference will gather CSHE alumni and affiliated researchers, along with leading scholars and practitioners from throughout the world, and focused on the theme: The New Nationalism and Universities. The two-day event will also provide a venue for past CSHE Visiting Scholars to return to Berkeley and present their current research, or to reflect on their work while at the Center.

April 24, 2017 - In preparation for the University of California’s 150th anniversary in 2018, and as part of its on-going research on the history of UC, CSHE has launched the new University of California ClioMetric History Project (UC-CHP). Clio was the muse of history in Greek mythology, and cliometric refers to the use of data and quantitative methods to explore history.

The Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) community is delighted with the announcement that our Director, Dr. Carol Christ, has been appointed as U.C. Berkeley’s 11th Chancellor, effective July 1, 2017, after approval by the University of California Board of Regents. She is the first woman appointed Chancellor since the University was founded in 1868. “I feel honored and privileged to lead the campus at this challenging time,” Dr. Christ said. “It is a small way to give back for everything the university has given me. My experience at Berkeley has been transformational; it formed my ideas of higher education, and it formed my ideals of higher education. I look forward to working with Berkeley’s many communities in the months and years ahead in a way true to UC’s motto, ‘Fiat lux’ — ‘Let there be light.’”

December 12, 2016 – CSHE is pleased to announce that at least eight major research universities will collaborate in the administration of the new SERU Graduate Student Survey (gradSERU) in 2017.

Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton proposes that all public colleges and universities be made tuition-free for students from families with incomes of up to $85,000 initially, rising to $125,000 by 2021. Clinton also promises a three-month moratorium for all federal student loan borrowers on repaying their debt, during which time borrowers would get help refinancing their loans or moving into income-driven repayment plans.

UC Berkeley’sCenter for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) was established in 1957 as an Organized Research Unit (ORU), and the first research institute in the world devoted to the study of systems, institutions, and processes of higher education.  CSHE is now part of the campus’ Goldman School of Public Policy, in part reflecting the Center’s long history of interdisciplinary and policy relevant research. Previously, CSHE reported directly to the UC Berkeley Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.

Berkeley, CA– On September 8th, Robert Birgeneau, Chancellor Emeritus of UC Berkeley, and Henry Brady, Dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, will elaborate on the findings of the Lincoln Project, a comprehensive study that explores the impact of reduced state investment in public higher education, and strategies for the United States to retain the global status of its public research universities. The seminar is sponsored by the Center for Studies in Higher Education at UC Berkeley, and will take place in the Academic Innovation Studio, located in Dwinelle 117, from 12:00pm to 1:00 pm.
